Company culture is made up of mostly unwritten rules that serve as a guideline for achieving the company's mission. It encompasses the expectations and values of a company and it exists as shared behaviours, norms, and expectations of a group, permeating multiple levels of a corporate structure.
Company culture influences the overall work environment, including everything from the attitudes and behaviour of the company and its employees to its ethics and preferred leadership style.
Company culture can also contribute to a company's expectations of their employees and how they interact with each other, and contributes to a shared sense of belonging. It serves as a framework within which employees can learn and grow both within the company and as individual beings, and guides how employees make decisions that further the company's mission while upholding its values. Company culture can also enhance individual wellbeing and group dynamics, and can increase productivity and improve the quality of work.

Types of company culture
Over the years, researchers at Spencer Stuart have identified eight types of company culture (read more about their research here). These eight types are briefly outlined below:
A caring culture focuses on relationships and mutual trust. Think warm, welcoming places where people help each other and provide support.
A purposeful culture focuses on idealism and altruism. Employees work on ensuring the long-term viability of the company. Think sustainability, contributing to a greater cause, and global community.
A learning culture places importance on exploration and creativity, open-mindedness, brainstorming, and alternative-seeking. Think curiosity, innovation, and adventure.
A culture that is characterized by enjoyment is fun and exciting. Workplaces encourage people to do what makes them happy. Think playful, humorous, and spontaneous.
A results-focused culture employs people who are determined to achieve outcomes and become top performers. Think success, goal-oriented, and accomplishment.
A culture characterized by authority is strong, decisive, and bold. Think confidence and control.
A safety culture places planning and preparedness at the forefront. Work is predictable and things are thought through with meticulous detail. Think realistic, protected, and forethought.
An order-oriented culture places value on respect and structure. Employees fit into the group by embracing shared norms and approach work methodically. Think cooperation, procedures, and customs.
