HARMFUL HABITS OF LOUSY LEADERS
10 traits that characterize bad leaders
Neglecting relationships
Each relationship inside and outside of the workplace is important. Take time out of your day to talk with others to forge strong relationships.
Tolerating toxic team members
Providing a toxic team member with more time to 'improve their behaviour' doesn't work. If someone doesn't fit or contribute to the team, it is time to reassign, retrain, or remove that person before they cause other employees to become increasingly uncomfortable and leave.
Avoiding tough conversations
Sometimes, a discussion is needed between team members in order to remedy mistakes and get things back on track. By avoiding conversations that are perceived as difficult or unpalatable, leaders do themselves a disservice by allowing everything to continue to diverge from the preferred path and/or damage what has been accomplished thus far.
Talking too much (and listening too little)
In order to have a conversation, two or more individuals are needed. Each individual should have the opportunity to share their opinions, insight, or recommendations, and hear what the other person(s) think about those comments.
Never apologizing
Saying "I was wrong" builds trust more than justification or empty excuses. Being a leader doesn't automatically make one incapable of being in the wrong.
Focusing on problems
Things one may consider bad traits can actually have good qualities in them. For example, someone who is a slow decision-maker might be great at working on projects that require close attention to detail.
Hiding behind faults
Using the phrase, "That's just the way I am" is not a valid way of explaining a leader's own faults (for example, interrupting). Another sentence to watch out for: "I'm just not good at that."
Making feedback conversations personal
When giving feedback, don't criticize someone's character. Instead, describe how the behaviour impacts the team: "When you [behaviour], the team [impact]."
Listening with a fault-finding attitude
Spending time searching for weaknesses and faults in others makes it harder for that person to feel heard and takes focus away from the good ideas that that person has.
Hoarding good jobs
Sharing the work - including the good jobs - keeps workers from feeling like they're only around to take care of the projects that the leader doesn't want to do.
