6 traits of inclusive leaders
The world is an ever-changing landscape filled with diverse markets, customers, ideas, and talent. Throughout it all, there are diverse workers, each with their own history, beliefs, ideas, culture, religion, and understanding of the world, all of which come together in a variety of situations throughout the often overlapping realms of work and daily life.
How does a leader encourage and embrace these differences among their workers in the shifting work environment? That seems to be the million-dollar question these days.
Unsurprisingly, there are countless voices on this issue. I have selected one to help with this topic today: Deloitte University Press has identified six traits of inclusive leaders, which were outlined in great detail in this article. And while I highly recommend that you take the time to read Deloitte's article, I have briefly outlined the six traits of inclusive leaders below.
Cognizance
Inclusive leaders are mindful of the blindspots and biases that exist within the workplace as well as the influence that day-to-day life outside of work can add to the challenge of achieving a diverse and inclusive workplace. They learn about their own personal biases through feedback, and follow processes and self-regulate to ensure that these biases do not affect their decision-making.

Curiosity
Inclusive leaders have an open mindset and work hard to understand how others view and experience the world around them through their own lens. This mindset leaves them open to different ideas and experiences and keeps them from being quick to judge or brush off what others have to say. Through active listening they gain a deeper understanding of others' perspectives and use what they learn to shape their own understanding of the world that evolves over time.
Courage
Inclusive leaders have the courage to speak up when something is not right, and to challenge the status quo that serves as roadblocks for individuals in the workplace. They have the courage to admit that they don't have all of the answers, to accept their own vulnerability and press onward with humility.
Cultural intelligence
In addition to understanding how other cultures may interact with each other within the workplace, inclusive leaders also understand how their own culture impacts their personal worldview. They are driven to learn about and experience other cultures and work well with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. They encourage intercultural collaboration and the application of collective intelligence in the workplace.
Commitment
Leaders are committed to treating all team members with respect, understanding their uniqueness, and ensuring that each individual feels connected. Committed leaders understand the value of diversity within their business and how inclusion leads to innovation and new market growth.
Collaboration
Inclusive leaders create an environment where individuals feel valued and empowered to contribute their own diverse perspectives and ideas while working together as a team. They recognize that individuals within a group might be drawn to each other based on their similarities, which would lead back down the path towards sameness and bias, and adapt styles and processes to ensure that every team member has a voice.
