MAKE THE MOST OF HEALTHY HABITS
There's more to habits than simply eating better or getting a good night's sleep.
We've all read the lists of habits that are key to living a happier life: eat healthy foods, check. Stay active, check. Make time for family and friends, check. Get enough sleep, check (ish). Inspired, we make our own lists and resolve to follow them closely. We check off as many items as we can, and consider our lives healthier, more wholesome, and full of meaning.
But here's the thing: people try to fit their healthier habits inside of their current live - they shape their idea of a healthy lifestyle or work-life balance to fit within the framework of their responsibilities at work and at home, their time restrictions, and the roles that they play in life as a parent, a student, etc.
And while these lists of healthy habits might improve your emotional or physical wellbeing, they have the potential to provide way more value when they are embraced with growth in mind.

So while it's relatively easy to decide that you want to start spending more time socializing by going on coffee dates with friends or inviting family members over to dinner, when you decide to also start participating in a monthly Zoom 'virtual get together' with a group of like-minded entrepreneurs or aspiring leaders, you are creating a truly healthy habit. This habit can contribute to a happier, healthier life while also empowering you to invest in your personal and professional growth.
How to make the most of healthy habits
In order to get the most value out of healthy habits, it's necessary to view them in the context of your current mental, emotional, and physical state. You also need to consider your current limitations and your vision of the future. There is one thing that turns a regular healthy habit into a growth-oriented one: the question "why?"
Below are some considerations that you should keep in mind when creating healthy, growth-oriented habits. Let's use "attending a spin class" as a solution to the common list item "stay active" in the following examples.

Master Your Mind
Understand yourself and direct your energy where it is needed most.
Think about the present
Ask yourself, "How will this benefit me right now?"
For example, attending that spin class will:
But it might also be just what you need to clear your head and reduce your anxiety and stress.
Think about the future
Ask yourself, "How will this benefit me in the short and long term?"
For example, attending that spin class might be just what you need to begin working towards your dream of biking through Europe before you reach the age of 50.
Think about overlap
Your life is not separated into two realms of work and life. There are many other areas of your life that must be considered as separate categories. For example, attending that spin class might help your career by clearing your head so you can focus on that big project at work.
Think about limitations
Limits are frequently imposed upon us by ourselves, but it would be unreasonable to say that you should quit your 9-5 job today so that you can participate in the Tour de France this year. All of your aspirations can be fulfilled, but you don't have to take a giant leap right away.
Start slow. Take it one step at a time. A step forward, no matter how small, counts.
For example, if you can't attend a spin class because there's a waitlist, or your bank account is dry, or your children have soccer practice on that day, ask yourself, "What can I do for the time being that's similar?"
Can you go for a bike ride around your neighbourhood? Can you go for a run or a walk? Can you organize a small group of friends to bike together?
