WHY DO GOALS FAIL?
Why do we sometimes fall short of achieving the goals we set for ourselves?
Most of us believe that nothing is impossible, but we sometimes set goals that are destined to fail. The following are a few reasons that we sometimes do not achieve our goals.
The goal is unrealistic
For example, if you have never set foot in a dance studio, it is a bit unrealistic to think that you will be dancing the lead in Black Swan six months from now. It is also not feasible to become a millionaire in the next three years if you work in an entry level job. This does not mean that these things cannot be done at all, but if you want to reach your goals and dreams, be sure to set them so that you can realistically achieve them within your time frame.
The goal is poorly defined
There are five criteria that each goal should meet. Among them is making sure you include a way to measure success. For example, if your goal is increasing your social network, is one friend going to help you reach that goal, or maybe five? When setting goals, clearly define it. This will lessen your chance of failure.
The goal doesn't fit you
Sometimes the people around us influence us by infusing their beliefs and dreams into our thinking processes. And for a time, we believe that this is what we want, but upon reflection, their goal is not what we really want.
For example, if your parents think you should be a lawyer, you might end up following that path for a while but realize after a time that you want to be an artist. When setting your goals, it is essential to sit down, reflect on and consider only your own thoughts and needs.

This mini-course gives you the space to envision and design your dream life and plan actionable steps that will make it a reality.
You're afraid of the results
Achieving your goals can cause great personal change. Change is often a scary thing to face. It can cause the upheaval of your entire life. That can be a concern for people with big dreams.
The goal hasn't been written down
This can result in a loss of the idea. Writing down goals and reminding yourself of them often can help you to keep your focus on them without forgetting what you truly want to do with your life.
You're having trouble focusing
You cannot change your entire life overnight. For example, if you want to get a better job, live in a bigger house, advance your education, make more money, and have a child in the next two years, you have far too many life-changing goals in a short span of time. Break your goals down into achievable, measurable pieces on a realistic timeline.
How you can help yourself achieve your goals
Start with the end in mind.
Reaching your goal, whatever it may be, will lead you beyond that goal and into something new. You don't want to create your goals based on present circumstances. With the end in mind, do the following:
Your goal should have value and support your vision for yourself and your life.
Tie each goal to a picture.
Remind yourself often of your goals helps you keep the momentum going as you work through obstacles that stand in your way.
Writing down the goal where you will see it often is a good way to remind yourself of your goal. Holding a mental picture of how your life will be after you have achieved your goal does much the same thing.
Taking the previous example of saving a hundred thousand dollars by retirement age, when you tie that to a positive mental picture of yourself sitting in your dream retirement home that you have built with your savings you remain motivated and focused as you deposit your hard-earned wages into your savings account.
Creating a vision board is another, more creative way to remind yourself of your goal. While this may sound like a silly arts and crafts project, it does more than just look good on your office wall; it brings into focus the many facets of your life that you believe will be affected by your achieving your goal.
Check in with yourself often.
Of all of the people who set New Year's resolutions, how many of them make it past the first week? The second? The first month? Of course, there are many obstacles that stand in between us and the goals that we set for ourselves: temptation and loss of focus are two of the most common. But another is simply that we do not acknowledge a constant in our universe: change. Things change within our lives on a daily basis, and we must recognize that our own aspirations are not an exception.
Have your circumstances changed? Have you found a purpose that is better suited for you? Yes, we have to beware of distractions and problems with our own motivation and time management, but we also have to show ourselves a modicum of leniency. Just because the person you were at the beginning of the year set a particular goal does not mean that that person will have the same hopes, dreams, and aspirations six or nine months down the road.
What have you accomplished so far? Give yourself credit for any gains you have made - every victory is important, no matter how small. How much are you actually accomplishing? Make adjustments to your plans and to your goals as necessary.
What resources are available to you at this moment that will help you reach your goals? What things are keeping you from reaching your goals? Keeping track of these things is important; information is power in any situation, and it is certainly true of this one.
Hold yourself accountable.
Every day that passes takes you further away from the day that you set that initial goal. When life gets busy, it can be hard to keep focused on that ever-distant day and the motivation you felt when you decided that that was what you were going to set out to accomplish. It is often helpful to find someone who can help you stay on track, called an accountability partner.
